Gender Neutral Baby Nursery

Are you waiting to find out the gender of your baby? Or are you like me and just LOVE neutral decor? Either way, CONGRATULATIONS! Today I’m sharing an in-depth look (with links!) to all of the decor in our gender-neutral nursery.

Hey, friend! My name is Macy Gilson and I am so excited you’re here. I am a pediatric speech language pathologist, children’s author, and new mom. I started this community as a place for parents to share stories and find support in their mission to raise kind humans and create welcoming homes. I love all things home, baby and education and I am honored that you’re here!

I always loved the idea of waiting until the baby was born to find out the gender…I guess I’m old-fashioned like that! Although it was hard at time, especially when our friends had fun gender reveals to celebrate the arrivals of their babies, we held firm and received the surprise of our life when our son was born! Now that we officially are parents to a BOY, we’ve been adding touches to our neutral nursery to create the perfect room for him!

Gender Neutral Baby Nursery

I shared a sneak peek of the nursery on TikTok and by far, the most popular question I was asked was, “Where did you get that dresser?”

I bought a plain, affordable dresser from Ikea and then added the cane detailing and drawer pulls. I created an entire blog post that outlines my process with a step-by-step tutorial if you are interested in creating a beautiful dresser (on a budget!!). We also purchased these drawer dividers that help us stay organized and keep everything in its place.

I styled the dresser with this beautiful stone lamp from Amazon (I actually bought two because I love it so much and keep one in our room!) and a black floating frame.

On the other side of the dresser, I hung this round, black mirror and our beloved VAVA baby monitor. In front of the mirror, I placed a large frame with the lyrics to the song my dad and I danced to at my wedding. I think it’s an understated touch, but I read the lyrics every morning and now sing them to my own baby. Next to the frame, we keep our Hatch sound machine (truly the best!!) and this mini stool with a little plant for some color. We also opted for a diaper pail and are loving it so far. We chose the Diaper Genie and keep it next to his dresser. We have the fresh scented bags and cannot smell a thing!

Our crib is another IKEA find because not only is it minimal and beautiful, but you can’t beat the price ($99!) We have the Graco Premium Foam crib/toddler mattress and it has over 40,000 reviews on Amazon and we have several different crib sheets, but our favorites are these Amazon Basic sheets and these muslin sheets. Of course, we do not keep any pillows, blankets or loveys in his crib while he sleeps, but for styling purposes, I included a few pillows from Homegoods and a sweet bunny (the first baby item my husband and I purchased after finding out I was pregnant!). We were also gifted the softest blanket in the world to hang over the side of his crib, as well as an embroidered name swaddle. I saw many embroidered swaddles on Etsy, however, because we didn’t know the gender (and therefore had two baby names), I decided to embroider this myself. I embroidered one with our girl name and one with our boy name and took both to the hospital. We have now stored the girl blanket and hope to use it if we ever are blessed with a daughter! Next to his crib is my favorite olive tree. I have used this olive tree in every room of my house and it looks great anywhere. It’s the most natural looking faux tree and is now available on Amazon!

We chose these blackout curtains and this Amazon curtain rod (we also have this curtain rod on all of the other windows in our house). Our glider was our biggest “splurge” item in the nursery, but we got a great deal on it during Black Friday. Both my husband and I absolutely LOVE it and think it was worth every penny. I found this really cool driftwood twisted side table at Homegoods, so I can’t link it, but here is a similar one from Wayfair.

Another one of my favorite things in the nursery is this book wall. As an avid reader and children’s book author, it was a priority to me to have lots of books in the nursery. We chose these acrylic bookshelves because they look beautiful and are easy to clean.

The last area of our nursery is the changing table. I found this stunning antique dresser on Facebook marketplace and knew it would make the perfect changing table. Our nursery is quite small, so we removed the doors from the old closet and put this changing table inside the dresser. I think it looks so beautiful and helps us maximize our space. On top of the changing table is our Hatch Grow, which is a scale and wipeable changing pad all in one. If you’re building a baby registry, put this on it!! We also have a wire tray with all of our baby essentials, including diaper cream, our beloved tush-swiper, wipe dispenser and hand sanitizer. We keep all of our diapers, wipes, diaper pail refills and bath stuff in this changing table/dresser and all of his clothes and toys in the cane dresser.

A couple other quick things…the color on our walls is Swiss Coffee by Behr in satin finish and the trim is Swiss Coffee by Behr in semi gloss finish. The matte black ceiling fan/light is from Amazon (linked here) and the rug is 8x8 because we have a square room, but I also have this rug in 9x12 in my living room. It’s the perfect neutral, but not-too-plain rug!

Congratulations, again, on this exciting time in your life. Whether it’s your first or your fifth, preparing for a new baby is such a special time and I am so excited for you! We just transitioned our son from the bassinet in our room to the crib in his room and I am working on a blog post sharing how the transition went. For those of you that are far more experienced than me, leave a comment and let me know when you transitioned your baby to his/her own room and how it went! I’m excited for better sleep for all of us, but even more excited to be spending more time in his gender neutral nursery!
