THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AMAZON AFFILIATE LINKS.

It’s officially been one year since I started #MacysMustReads and it has quickly become a blog favorite. If you’re new, I share my favorite books from each season, along with a quick synopsis and rating. You can find my previous lists here:

Summer 2019 Fall 2019 Winter 2019 Spring 2020

I had lots of time to read this summer and I even tested out Audible on a few long road trips. I know summer isn’t over yet, but I wanted to get this out so I could start working on my Fall 2020 list!

  • Ask Again, Yes! - Mary Beth Keane

    • I was originally drawn to this book because I thought it was going to be about the dynamics of two law enforcement families in NYC. Turns out, most of the story focuses on an incident that occurred between the families and the love that grew from tragedy. It was much heavier than I anticipated but a great read!

      8/10 stars

  • The Royal We - Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan

    • I had really high hopes for this one because some of my favorite books (My Oxford Year, American Royals) are centered around Great Britian and the English monarchy. It took a while to really get into the meat of this story, and once we did, it was over!

      7/10 stars

  • The Unhoneymooners - Christina Lauren

    • This is a fun vacation read - short, sweet, hilarious and quirky. The Unhoneymooners is about a maid of honor and best man (who hate each other) that take the bride and grooms honeymoon to Hawaii after the rest of the wedding gets a stomach bug. Entertainment at its finest!

      7.5/10 stars

  • The First Time - Colton Underwood

    • I’m not a huge fan of Colton Underwood, but I am a huge fan of the Bachelor franchise, so I was super interested in hearing his side of the Bachelor experience. I loved, loved, loved this book because it gives so much insight into all of the things we, as viewers, don’t see! A must-read if you’re a Bachelor/ette fan!

      8/10 stars

  • Educated - Tara Westover

    • This has been on my list for quite a while and I am so glad I had a chance to read it this summer. The story is a memoir about Tara’s life in a fundamentalist family in Idaho who didn’t believe in the public education system. Tara’s life is absolutely fascinating and, as a public school SLP, really made me think about what life would look like without public schools

      8.5/10 stars

  • I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness - Austin Channing Brown

    • In light of all of the things going on in our country, I knew I wanted to educate myself by listening to Black voices and reading Black authors. I chose this book because I was instantly drawn to the description, which reads: “Austin Channing Brown’s first encounter with a racialized America came at age seven, when she discovered her parents named her Austin to deceive future employers into thinking she was a white man.” Whether you’re white or Black or anything in between, read this.

      9/10 stars

  • Untamed - Glennon Doyle

    • I’m in love with the US Women’s National soccer team and have been an Abby Wambach fan since I was a kid. If you don’t know who Glennon Doyle is, you should. Glennon was a married Christian “mommy blogger” when she met Abby Wambach on her book tour, and they are now married. Untamed is a “testament to female empowerment and self-love, with an endearing coming-out story at the center” and a favorite of mine.

      9/10 stars

  • 101 Essays that Will Change the Way You Think - Brianna Wiest

    • So I found Brianna Wiest on Instagram (@briannawiest) and fell in love with her words, so when I found her book, I bought it immediately. I think I highlighted more in this book than any book before - seriously, like whole entire chapters! Read it. Now.

      10/10 stars

Like I mentioned earlier, I also listened to a few books on Audible:

I am DEFINITELY not an auditory learner and had the hardest time concentrating while listening to these books. My husband and I listened to these books on our drive from Texas to California and back and most of the time, he had to paraphrase each chapter after it was over. I can’t fairly rate these books due to my lack of attention, but my husband loved them all! (I think I will stick with my Kindle for the foreseeable future!)
